One of Promaxo’s First Patients Opens Up on His Experience

If you were to ask 72-year-old resident of Jackson, Mississippi, Bill C. for a list of his fears, there’s a good chance the paper he would hand back would be just about blank.

It seems that undergoing heart surgery and completely repairing and reversing long-lasting damage has a way of shifting one’s perspective on these sorts of things.

“When you’ve had a quadruple bypass, there’s not a lot that is going to scare you,” Bill says.

Prostate cancer strikes

Bill’s unrelenting fearlessness has served him well the past few years. It’s also what gave him hope when he recently received a prostate cancer diagnosis.

They say fortune favors the bold, and Bill’s latest diagnosis was confirmed in the form of an MR-guided biopsy with the Promaxo MRI system. Dr. John D. Adams, Jr. of Mississippi Urology Clinic is a part of a growing team of physicians across the US who are paving the way for improved patient care with Promaxo’s MRI technology, which is (now) commercially available. John is the lead physician for an on-going clinical study using the Promaxo MRI to help target high grade lesions by guiding biopsy needles to the region of interest for sampling and has been offering this option to his patients since December 2020.

“I felt very pleased that [Dr. Adams] offered me this special opportunity to have this procedure done,” Bill says. “I trusted his skill and knowledge in exploring this avenue.”

The Promaxo MRI system aims to enhance the patient experience with “patient-first” amenities that include a non-invasive approach and open configuration for comfort, quiet operation and portability that enables offices like Mississippi Urology Clinic to house the scanner onsite.

The Promaxo difference

Bill’s experience with the Promaxo MRI system involved a targeted approach that ultimately identified high-grade prostate cancer. The same cancer that Promaxo’s live MR-guided biopsy found was actually missed by the traditional standard of care, or what’s called a standard ultrasound biopsy.

Always the optimist, Bill says he wasn’t dejected by the diagnosis—rather, he was relieved, impressed with the technology and ready to fight. In addition to feeling thankful that he received access to advanced technology, Bill was proud to serve as one of the first Promaxo MRI system patients. “I wanted to be a part of something that will be helpful to others,” he says.

Without Promaxo, Bill’s cancer may have gone undetected until it was too late. At the very least, his treatment would have been delayed and the odds of successfully treating the disease would surely have been diminished. That’s because identifying and treating prostate cancer at an early enough stage is most often associated with favorable outcomes.

Making the best of a bad situation

Bill will soon begin treatment for prostate cancer, a regimen that includes non-invasive radiation five days a week but not before knocking out a trip to one of the few places in the world capable of matching his energy.

“We took a trip to Disney World a few weeks ago because we’ll need to be close to home for the next few weeks,” he says. “But we’re looking forward to getting this behind us and taken care of.”

When asked what he would tell others about the Promaxo MRI system, Bill answers that he would urge anyone who needs it to take advantage of the technology. “The more you know about the area that needs to be treated, the better off you will be,” he adds.

“And I think this tool helps that. It’s only going to speed up your recovery, and it’s just a wonderful thing. I can’t say enough about how appreciative I am to everyone at Promaxo. They put a lot of time and skill into developing this technology.” At Promaxo, scenarios like this are why the team wakes up every morning to go into work and continue their pursuit of helping more people like Bill.
